Leghorn
Pros: Very productive. Available in a variety of colours.
Cons: Reputation for being flighty.
Eggs: Lay lots of white eggs.
Leghorns are regarded as a superb laying breed and in the past were the main breed kept for commercial egg production before the introduction of hybrid hens. In fact Leghorns form part of the genetic make- up of many of today's commercial layers.)
Leghorns have a reputation for being a little flighty but with calm, gentle handling they will become tame. They come in a variety of colours : We keep leghorns in brown, white and exchequor (white with black splashes).
Leghorns are prolific layers which seldom go broody. Despite being active they are suitable for keeping in a back garden situation.
