Food and Water
Layers pellets are specially formulated to provide everything your hens need. Free ranging hens will supplement their diet with what they scratch up.
Many people choose to give their hens mixed corn as a treat, however you should be careful not to overfeed your hens with corn as it can make them overweight and decrease egg production. Corn can be a useful treat to help to tame your chickens as they love it!
Chickens enjoy pecking at grass and other greenery and will also appreciate many clippings and cuttings from the garden- particularly any leftover vegetables from the garden- some plants are toxic to hens so it is best to check whether your excess veg is suitable for hens.
Chicks should be fed chick crumbs, which are higher in protein up until they are around six weeks old when they should be weaned onto growers pellets until they are around twenty weeks old and can be moved onto layers pellets.
All chickens should have access to fresh water at all times. In hot weather chickens will drink much more and in cold weather water may freeze so it is important to check food and water at least once a day.
