Araucana
Pros: Lay a good amount of beautiful, blue eggs.
Cons: As they are a crested breed they should be carefully checked for mites.
Eggs: Beautiful Blue Colour.
Araucanas originate from South America. They are an attractive bird with the unusual addition of laying blue eggs. They are generally placid birds who grow well and mature relatively quickly.
The Araucanas commonly kept in this country have tails a small crest and a muffled head. There is a rumpless form which is where the chicken is born without a tail. We currently breed Araucanas in red and black.
As with the Chamois Poland Bantams care must be taken to check the profuse feathering around the head of Araucana chickens regularly for mites - They are no more prone to them than other breeds but the mites are more difficult to spot and then treat.
The blue eggs are coloured throughout the shell so the inside is the same colour as the outside.
